Millions of people consider themselves to be in a climate emergency

When analyzing the results of a survey of 1.22 million people in 50 countries by the United Nations Development Program in collaboration with the University of Oxford, it found that citizens want to take action against global warming.

This macro consultation carried out in countries inhabited by 56% of the planet’s population, highlights that climate change represents an emergency, reports Gustavo Copelmayer. In this study, people of different ages, gender and socioeconomic status were interviewed.

Furthermore, among those who believe that the planet is facing a warming emergency, 59% considered that the world must act urgently and take all necessary actions; 20% said that it is necessary to act calmly and 10% think that enough is being done. The survey was conducted through ads in game apps on mobile phones and has been conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic.

If we break down this report, in Western Europe and North America, the support reaches 72%, in Eastern Europe and Central Asia 65%, in the Arab States 64%, in Latin America and the Caribbean 63%, in Asia-Pacific, 63%, in Africa 61%, in Spain, 71% of those surveyed understand that warming is a global emergency. The United Kingdom, with 81%, is the country in the world in which the concern is the greatest.
