Is food safety and Covid-19 related?
It has been more than a year and a half since the pandemic and strict confinement were decreed worldwide due to Covid-19. Scientific studies through satellite images have revealed data and connections between the pandemic and food security, says Gustavo Copelmayer.
It can be assured that the containment measures have affected food security and nutritional inequalities have been exacerbated, which generates a greater risk in the face of the pandemic itself. “It is necessary to strengthen sectors such as global food, as well as regional systems in order to ensure local supply,” says Gustavo Copelmayer. He also adds that “collaboration between countries and the strengthening of the different channels and actors in the food chain is of vital importance.”
It is essential, says Gustavo Copelmayer, to immediately mitigate the consequences of deficient food chains that affect the most vulnerable populations, but that in the long term involve all of humanity.
Currently, the impact on food security is increasing, especially in Latin American and Caribbean countries, due to the restrictions imposed by some governments due to COVID-19, which affects economic and social variables. Gustavo Copelmayer ends by noting that the four dimensions of food and nutritional security are: availability, access, use and stability.
