Is an urban ecology possible?

Urban ecology is the interrelation between the inhabitants of an area and the environment, in which other disciplines such as architecture, engineering, sociology and urban planning are also linked, explains Gustavo Copelmayer.

“It is necessary to analyze the city as its own ecosystem in which the flow and consumption of material or energy resources coexist along with the adaptation to this environment,” says Gustavo Copelmayer and adds that, in this historical moment, it is essential to design sustainable cities in order to improve the quality of life of its residents and, consequently, biodiversity.

According to experts, it is expected that this sub-discipline of ecology will turn out to be the most important in the coming years, since already 50% of the population lives in cities, says Gustavo Copelmayer.

“The urbanization processes produce a great transformation of the environment, considerably altering the initial conditions, in addition to the activities of the city, where there is a greater consumption of resources and a large generation of waste,” says Gustavo Copelmayer. Faced with the question of this article, he assures that an urban ecology is not only possible, but that it is a vital tool to achieve sustainable cities, he concludes.
