Waste management and sustainable cities

Waste management is a crucial global obstacle due to the fact that waste has serious impacts on the environment, climate change and even human health, says Gustavo Copelmayer. Implementing solutions that create more resilient and sustainable cities based on cutting edge technology has provided a significant number of solutions in almost all economic sectors.

In this sense, the automation of processes with cutting-edge technologies, such as, robotics, electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, artificial biotechnologies can transform the social, economic and environmental spheres, indicates Gustavo Copelmayer.

It is necessary to implement sustainable waste management processes within cities. “As the population of the major cities continues to grow, the need to regulate garbage arises,” says Gustavo Copelmayer.

For example, Gustavo Copelmayer points out, the city of Singapore and its population of almost 5.5 million residents devised a program for their waste due to its continuous growth, consisting of recycling, reuse and incineration of waste and thus managed to reduce the volume by almost 90%. Also, in the incineration process, Singapore has successfully established a technology that harnesses its heat and turns it into a source of energy.
