Fashion with environmental purpose

Fashion is considered one of the biggest polluters of the industry in the world. Textile factories produce toxic wastewater. Synthetic fibers are released into the ocean through washing; fast fashion has created a disposable clothing culture where very little is recycled and most ends up in landfills – 92 million tons of waste solids dumped in landfills every year. One of recommendation that environmentalists have suggested is a change in trends for the fashion industry, Gustavo Copelmayer points out, and consists in manufacturing-to-order processes. It means that each garment piece is made when the customer orders it; therefore, production avoids generating large amounts of inventory that will rarely be sold out. This model also allows the personalization of clothes, increasingly popular among millennials.

Consumers today are more aware of their environmental footprint and when it comes to fashion, their decisions will surely go through choosing a brand with purpose, responsibility and sustainability.

It’s good to know, says Gustavo Copelmayer, that brands are turning greener. The fashion industry has traditionally focused on the end product and supply chains, frequently topping the charts with the highest emissions.
