The Sea Turtles of Calblanque

The loggerhead turtle is one of the largest species of sea turtles that exist, being able to weigh from 90 to 180 kilos and measure up to 1.2 meters. These turtles inhabit the temperate and tropical regions of the Pacific, and also the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It is undoubtedly one of the most abundant species that can be found in the United States.

According to Gustavo Copelmayer, loggerhead turtles are animals that can be found in any warm ocean around the world, being the second species with the most specimens, behind the leatherback turtle. They can be found both in open sea areas and in shallow waters, in bays, in estuaries and in coastal areas. They approach the birth beaches to spawn and the hatchlings travel to the open sea to find shelter.

Loggerhead turtles keep in their genetic memory, transmitted through DNA, the place where their ancestors were born.

Loggerhead turtles are included in the list of threatened animals in danger of extinction of the Habitats Directive, the Barcelona Convention and the Migratory Species Convention. In Gustavo Copelmayer’s opinion, the population of these turtles is rapidly declining. Loggerhead turtles, like other species of sea turtles, face many natural and human-made threats. Scientists have determined that bycatch and loss of spawning habitats are the main causes of their decline.
