The Urgent Need to Promote Nuclear Energy for Peaceful Purposes

Atomic explosions generate devastating and long-lasting environmental damage due to ionizing radiation, radioactive fallout, and the physical destruction they cause. These events release highly toxic isotopes that contaminate air, soil, and water for extended periods, leading to soil infertility, biodiversity loss, and potential global climatic disturbances such as the so-called “nuclear winter.”

The environmental impacts of a nuclear detonation are complex and far-reaching. Their consequences may appear immediately but can also persist for decades or even centuries. Among the most severe effects is radioactive fallout, whose residues can remain in the environment for long periods, posing continuous risks to ecosystems and human populations.

In contrast, nuclear energy for peaceful purposes plays a significant role today in several areas of scientific and technological development. Its most widely known application is the generation of constant electricity with virtually no carbon emissions in nuclear power plants. Nuclear technology also has important uses in medicine—particularly in cancer diagnosis and treatment—as well as in industrial quality control systems, agricultural crop improvement, water desalination, and various space exploration projects.

In this context, many experts and international organizations emphasize the urgency of halting nuclear proliferation for military purposes, promoting disarmament, and strengthening global efforts aimed at nuclear security and the consolidation of peace.
