Human ecology: understanding the bond between society and nature
Human ecology is a scientific field that examines the complex relationship between people and their environment. It explores how societies transform ecosystems—and how those transformations, in turn, shape biological, social, and cultural life.
By bringing together natural and social sciences, human ecology seeks solutions that promote sustainability and collective well-being. Its core focus is the “human ecosystem”: how communities obtain energy and food, organize their settlements, and build social and cultural connections.
From this perspective, environmental quality depends largely on human behavior—how resources are used, how public health is protected, how social cohesion is strengthened, and how ecosystems are preserved for future generations. Human ecology offers a framework for imagining a future in which humanity and nature can coexist in balance.
