Global Biodiversity Plan: An Agreement for Life
The Global Biodiversity Framework, known as the Kunming-Montreal Agreement, aims to halt biodiversity loss by 2030 and start restoring nature. Adopted by 196 countries at COP15 in December 2022, its key goals include:
- Protect 30% of terrestrial and marine areas
- Restore degraded ecosystems
- Reduce food waste by 50%
Achieving these objectives requires coordinated action at international, national, and local levels, with governments, businesses, communities, and citizens working together. The plan sets 4 long-term goals for 2050 and 23 specific targets for 2030, with an estimated minimum investment of $200 billion per year.
Success depends on synergy with other global agreements, including the Paris Climate Accord, to ensure tangible, lasting results.
