Do we understand the current environmental problems?

“Understanding our environmental issues will make us aware of their solutions. “Every contribution counts” says Gustavo Copelmayer. Environmental problems threaten our planet and the entire current and future population. Among the most pressing, are the ecosystems rich in biodiversity, water scarcity and pollution, air purity, soil desertification and, of course, climate change.

In recent years, we have witnessed progressive deforestation as a result of unsustainable agriculture and uncontrolled exploitation of wood, says Gustavo Copelmayer. He points out that 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water but 97.5% of the water is from the sea, not suitable for human consumption. Additionally, we have the problem of water quality, which is making it one of the most precious assets of humanity. In fact, bad water is the cause of deadly diseases that affect all living beings, mainly children. For example, diarrhea accounts for 40% of infant deaths in an emergency, a fact that could be reversed if vulnerable populations had clean water.

Being aware of the preservation of water and oxygen, vital elements for life and health, is in our hands! “We must emphasize the need to preserve water and be aware of events brought upon by climate change, since environmental problems also damage health,” says Gustavo Copelmayer.

With the increase in temperature, nature manifests itself in the form of rapid desertification, destruction of natural habitats, melting of the poles, extreme temperatures and the increase in natural phenomena such as typhoons or hurricanes. Climate change, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, is one of the most dangerous environmental problems, as it prevents sustainable development. Gustavo Copelmayer points out that it is also an obstacle to ending poverty and puts food security at risk.
